Ariel University is located in the settlement city of Ariel, in the northern occupied West Bank, about 40 km (25 miles) east of Tel Aviv and southwest of Nablus.
It is the only Israeli university situated deep inside the West Bank and considered occupied territory under international law. Established as a college in 1982, it became a full-fledged university in 2012. Its location in an illegal settlement makes it highly controversial, with most of the international community not recognizing it as a legitimate Israeli institution.
