On December 5, the Israeli army completed its takeover of the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia. The next morning, a boy from the Abu Saleh family left a nearby school, which had been turned into a shelter for displaced persons, where he and his family were staying. He went out to see what remained after the bulldozers had left. An Israeli army sniper shot him in the heart. The family heard the gunfire and found him.
In his final moments, the family prepared for his burial. The father, mother, and four other children carried the body on a stretcher and headed to the cemetery, holding a white flag. After the burial, they returned to the school. About 200 meters from there, while still carrying the white flag and the empty stretcher, an Israeli army sniper killed them all.
Video footage shows the bodies huddled together on the ground, possibly trying to shield themselves from the gunfire. One family member (the sister and daughter) survived because she did not accompany them to the burial. She was unaware of her family’s fate due to the lack of phone coverage. The next day, the Israeli army began evacuating people from the area. The daughter came across the bodies of her six family members on the road.
She was in shock. The Israeli army did not allow her or her relatives to bury them. A few weeks later, the army withdrew from the area. Residents searching through the piles of remaining dirt found the remains of the family’s bodies; the Israeli bulldozers had buried them along with the waste.
