Archivist Notes: Punitive Raid in Qabatiya & Funduq

On January 10, 2025, various Israeli forces raided the village of Qabatiya, south of Jenin, in retaliation of a Palestinian attack against a settlers bus in Funduq where Rachel Cohen, 73, Aliza Rice, 70, and Israel Police Master Sgt. Elad Yaakov Winkelstein, 35, were killed.

  • A special Israeli military unit disguised in civilian clothes infiltrated the town, surrounding a house and an agricultural warehouse.(probably the Mista'arvim unit, used in Perfidy operations)
  • Stun grenades were used against the house, but no injuries or arrests were reported from this besieged site.
  • Israeli occupation forces launched a large-scale raid on Qabatiya, - sinding reinforcements included bulldozers and drones conducting aerial surveillance.
  • They targeted several neighborhoods and businesses.
  • Violent confrontations erupted, with heavy gunfire reported in multiple areas of the town. An explosive devices were reportedly used against the Israeli forces during the storming.

The Masada Unit -specialized in breaching barricaded positions and taking high-value suspects alive- was reportedly involved in the operation to locate suspects connected to a shooting attack in Funduq :

  • Two young men, Mustafa Al-Dabai and Ragheb Abu Al-Rab, were arrested after their home was stormed.
  • In total, 15 Palestinians, including a woman, were detained during the raid after Israeli troops ransacked their houses.
  • The Israeli forces blew up a room, destroyed a vehicle, and raided several shops and homes, seizing surveillance footage from one residence. Sources added that the army fired “Energa” anti-tank grenades at the besieged home without causing any injuries.

Fire and Obstruction:

A fire broke out in goods in front of a commercial store beneath a residential building. Flames quickly spread, threatening the entire structure. Israeli forces prevented civil defense teams from accessing the site to extinguish the fire. In response, Palestinian Red Crescent paramedics and journalists attempted to douse the fire using water bottles, highlighting the danger to the building’s residents.

Blockades and Withdrawal:

  • The Israeli forces blocked entrances to Qabatiya with bulldozers and continued operations in various parts of the town.

  • Following the raid, forces withdrew from the besieged site but maintained a presence in other areas, intensifying their deployment.

Calls to lead retaliation on Funduq

  • Kedumim Mayor Oziel Vatik called on Israel’s security establishment to demolish all illegal shops in al-Funduq following a Jan. 6 attack that killed three Israelis. Vatik labeled the shops a security threat, urging immediate action. IDF Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth extended a closure order on the shops until Wednesday after pressure from local residents.

  • Defense Minister Israel Katz condemned it as 'an act of war,' promising a decisive response.
