"In 2009, Elias Mariyah from the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank gave a testimony to B’Tselem. Mariyah, then 72 years old, described the bureaucratic nightmare the Israeli authorities put him through as he tried to access his own olive grove. When the Separation Barrier was built and the “seam zone” established in the early 2000s, Mariyah was cut off from his grove, which remained on the other side. From that point on, whenever Mariyah and his family wished to access their private land, they would have to ask the Israeli Civil Administration for a permit.
