"Khirbet Zanutah in the South Hebron Hills was home to 285 Palestinians, including 120 children. The community lived there for generations, long before Israel occupied the West Bank. In 2021, settler Yinon Levy established the Meitarim Farm outpost, resulting in increased attacks and harassment by settlers. These attacks escalated after October 7 and all 285 residents were forced to dismantle their homes and leave. Settlers immediately demolished the remaining structures and began grazing their flocks on the community’s fields. In response, a High Court petition was filed demanding the residents' return. While the state promised to allow their return and protect them, settlers continued their harassment, including demolishing structures and preventing their reconstruction, and blocking access to the community. In August 2024, some residents returned with the help of activists, aiming to rebuild, only to face ongoing attacks and destruction of their property. Zanutah is just one example of shepherding communities that have been dispossessed of their land in recent years. Farming outposts like Meitarim Farm are a key method Israel uses to drive Palestinians off their land and deprive them of their basic human rights.
