"Did you know it took THREE months to procure a helmet for Anas al-Sharif in northern Gaza?

You should know, dear brother Hossam, the Israeli pressure on AJ in the Gaza Strip had only one goal: stop the news coverage, and more importantly, stop the transmission of footage. Our correspondents on the ground received calls (from Israel) threatening them to stop their coverage. We mentioned Anas al-Sharif. Anas was contacted directly by an Israeli intelligence agent who told him, "You have to leave and stop your news coverage." When he refused, his home was bombed and his father killed.

All of us at AJ, even myself, my home was bombed, and I was out of Gaza. So we're speaking of systemic targeting, and we know what's the message. When the family of our colleague Wael Dahdouh was targeted, we understood the message. And I want to talk about something. When we had to leave the office because it was within a dangerous situation, we left our cameras there filming and transmitting live on top of the building, in the middle of Gaza City. Before the tanks arrived, the lenses of our cameras were sniped, one by one. Not a single camera was left.

  • So you don't film, so you don't share the truth.
  • They also struck live broadcast vehicles systematically. They just don't want live images to get out.
  • Is there no SNG (Satellite News Gathering) in Gaza now?
  • There is SNG, and we do the best we can, but you operate in a very difficult environment. You have people now talking about the rights of the press and of journalists—we met high-profile people at a conference and told them you're speaking of ethics and requirements of the profession and so on, but before that, how about you actually provide the necessary equipment? Did you know it took three months to secure a helmet for Anas al-Sharif in northern Gaza? And we were receiving messages from our audience questioning us, "Why are you leaving him without a helmet?"
  • They had no idea you were struggling for three months to get it to him.
  • Right. You may recall that when our colleague Ismail al-Ghoul was detained at Al-Shifa hospital before his martyrdom, his protective vest and helmet were lost. We spent the month after his release looking for replacements. We're facing a great deal of challenges.

I don't speak now from a position of frustration, or to frustrate. Rather, I am speaking from a position of pride and optimism, and not a purely emotional optimism. Thanks to the exemplary models of journalism that honour us in Gaza, our colleagues' reports are used and becoming reference material for international media agencies, and the ICJ is today-" cut-off going off topic
