Murder of Abdallah Hawash in Nablus

West Bank, Nablus 22 October, 2024
At least 1 martyred
**On october 22, on Tuesday evening,** the Israeli Security Forces (ISF) shot in the chest and killed an 11-year-old Palestinian boy throwing stones at armoured vehicles in Nablus despite posing no realistic threat, during a raid in the city of Nablus, northern West Bank. The scene was filmed, while the Israeli armored vehicles was stormed the street of Nablus, the child Abdullad Hawash, was seen throwing a rock in direction of them, and was immediatly shot deadly by a sniper. Abdullah Jamal Hawash, 11, succumbed to critical injuries sustained from the Israeli army's gunfire, a Palestinian Health Ministry statement said. The funeral of Palestinian child Abdallah Hawash, who was gunned down by Israeli occupation forces in Nablus in the occupied West Bank. [Picture](https://x.com/AyEShA_GhAffArY/status/1849366469055840524) Defense for Children International - Palestine [report](https://www.dci-palestine.org/israeli_forces_shoot_kill_11_year_old_palestinian_boy_in_nablus) : Abdullah Jamal Nidal Hawash, 11, was shot in the chest by Israeli forces around 5:30 p.m. on October 22 in the Fatayer Street area near the old city of Nablus. Abdullah was approximately 50 meters (164 feet) away from the last Israeli military vehicle as it withdrew when an Israeli soldier inside the vehicle fired a bullet at him, striking him near the heart. He was transported by a civilian vehicle to Rafidia Governmental Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Abdullah, a sixth grader, was struck in the chest with one bullet that exited from the back, according to information collected by DCIP. *“Israeli forces consistently use lethal force against Palestinian children, even in circumstances where they pose no threat to life or safety,”* said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director at DCIP. *“Abdullah’s killing highlights the routine nature of violence that Palestinian children face, where Israeli military incursions often escalate to fatal outcomes without accountability.”* Abdullah's death is a yet another clear example of an extrajudicial execution and wilful killing, as there was no imminent threat to justify the use of such force. Evidence collected by DCIP repeatedly shows that Israeli forces employ lethal force against Palestinian children with impunity, blatantly violating international humanitarian and human rights law. ## Context & chronology : 1) Earlier that day, at approximately 5:10 p.m., reports emerged about Israeli special forces operating undercover in the Habs al-Dam area of the old city of Nablus. The special force, disguised in civilian clothing, invaded the Old City of Nablus. 2) Around 5:20 p.m., Israeli military reinforcements, including seven military vehicles, entered from the At-Tur military gate, heading towards the southern entrances near Ras al-Ein and the old city. 4) “The special force entered the Old City and arrested a young man, after which the occupation army sent military reinforcements to support the special unit,". According to Wafa special units raided the Qaryoun neighborhood in Nablus Old City and fired tear gas. Their objective was reportedly to arrest a young man from this neighborhood. 5) The special forces arrested a young man in the old city and withdrew by 5:30 p.m., heading back toward the At-Tur military gate. As the convoy passed Fatayer Street near Sondos Supermarket, a soldier inside the last vehicle opened fire, killing Abdullah. 6) Following the entry of the special unit, Israeli military reinforcements arrived to back up the operation. This escalation led to confrontations and increased the intensity of the raid. Residents experienced heightened tension, with eyewitnesses describing the incursion as sudden and forceful, leading to significant fear and distress in the community. ## Previous similar incidents On 20 Octobre, in Hebron- Al-Khalil, ISF shot in the head a 17-year-old boy, now in critical condition. Another 11-year-old boy was critically injured after ISF shot him in the head on 17 Oct in Al-Arroub camp. In the past year alone, ISF killed 165 Palestinian children in the West Bank, incl. EJ, 36 in airstrikes and 129 shot with live ammunition, most in the head or upper body. Over the past few years, the Israeli military has conducted regular raids in the West Bank, which have escalated with the beginning of the war on Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023. Palestinians have also been violently attacked by illegal Israeli settlers. At least 760 Palestinians have since been killed and over 6,250 others injured by Israeli army fire in the occupied territory, according to the Health Ministry. Israeli forces and settlers have killed 86 Palestinian children in the occupied West Bank in 2024, according to documentation collected by DCIP. 167 Palestinian children have been killed in the occupied West Bank since October 7, 2023, according to documentation collected by DCIP. ## Broader Context of Nablus in the Conflict: Nablus, one of the largest cities in the West Bank, has become a focal point for both Israeli military actions and settler attacks. Since October of the previous year, settler-related violence and military raids have increased significantly in Nablus, causing not only deaths but also extensive property damage. UN and Palestinian Reactions: The UN Refugee and Works Agency (UNRWA) recently cited Nablus in reports on escalating violence in the West Bank, stating that operations there contributed to making September one of the deadliest months for Palestinians in the area in recent years. Conference for the renewal of Jewish settlement in Gaza

Gaza Envelope, Otef 21 October, 2024
**On October 21, 2024,** an ultranationalist **Conference for the renewal of Jewish settlement in Gaza** held **near the Gaza border, in Otef, not far of Kibbutz Be'eri in Israel**, under the leadership of Otzma Yehudit and the Likuds. At a Sukkot-themed gathering, settlers and far-right leaders outlined plans to reestablish Jewish settlements in the Strip 'within a year. Several high-ranking Israeli ministers and political figures called for reestablishing Jewish settlements in Gaza and encouraging Palestinian emigration. The event, dubbed "Preparing to Settle Gaza," was organized by the Nachala Settlement Movement and attended by members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party and other far-right political figures. The conference was a significant display of Israel’s far-right commitment to settlement expansion, with prominent figures like Ben Gvir, Smotrich, and Weiss advocating for the reestablishment of Jewish settlements in Gaza and the removal of Palestinians from the area. This conference was stopped during the day due to a security alert. The police forces and the IDF evacuated the citizens from the place. ## Key Figures and Their Speeches: ### Itamar Ben Gvir - National Security Minister: Ben Gvir, a far-right politician, argued that the "most ethical" solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was to "encourage emigration" of Palestinians from Gaza. He described this as a peaceful alternative that should not be done "by force" but by offering Palestinians the option to leave Gaza for other countries. He emphasized, "The Land of Israel is ours," promoting the idea that Jewish settlement should be reestablished in Gaza for security reasons. Ben Gvir’s speech was one of the central addresses at the conference. ### Bezalel Smotrich - Finance Minister: Smotrich, another prominent far-right figure, also advocated for rebuilding Jewish settlements in Gaza. Speaking before the conference, he stated that "without settlements, there is no security" and that Gaza is "part of the Land of Israel." He linked the relinquishment of land to increased danger, claiming that territory previously ceded by Israel had become "Iranian forward terror bases." Smotrich noted that discussions about settlements should take place "after the war," but expressed support for the idea as part of a broader plan for post-war rebuilding and security. ### May Golan - Minister of Social Equality and Advancement of the Status of Women: Golan, a member of Netanyahu's Likud party, argued at the conference that the "taking of territory" from Palestinians is what "hurts them most." She declared that reestablishing Jewish settlements in Gaza would be critical to Israel’s security, echoing the broader sentiment of the event that territorial control is crucial to defeating Palestinian resistance. ### Daniella Weiss - Veteran Settler Leader and Organizer: Weiss, a key figure in the settlement movement, went further, essentially calling for ethnic cleansing of Gaza. She proclaimed that after the October 7 massacre, "Gazans had lost their right to live in the territory" and that they "will not stay here." She argued that Israel should convince the world that Palestinians must leave Gaza, essentially advocating for their forced relocation. Weiss emphasized that "we came here to settle the entire Gaza Strip, from north to south, not just part of it," and revealed that Nachala had already formed six settlement groups comprising 700 families ready to establish new settlements. ### Avichay Buaron, Tali Gotliv, Ariel Kallner - Likud Members of Knesset: These Likud MKs attended the conference, backing the calls for resettlement and endorsing the idea that settlements provide security. Kallner, in particular, stated that "settlements are total victory" and that what Palestinians view as "Dar Islam" would become "Dar Yahud" (House of Jews), reinforcing the ideological message of reclaiming land for Jewish sovereignty. ### Haim Waltzer - Former Resident of Gush Katif Settlements in Gaza: Waltzer, who had been evacuated from Gaza in 2005 under the Gaza Disengagement Plan, shared his belief that settling Gaza was the only way to bring peace. He argued that Palestinians only care about land and that by taking it away and resettling Jews, "they will feel defeated." Waltzer also echoed Ben Gvir’s policy of encouraging emigration for Palestinians, suggesting that their departure would bring quiet and peace to Israel. ### Oved Hugi - Likud Party Leader in Yad Eliyahu, Tel Aviv: Hugi advocated for a more radical approach, suggesting that northern Gaza should be taken from Palestinians and allocated to Israeli communities along the Gaza border. He supported controlling key areas like the Philadelphi Corridor to prevent Hamas from rearming. Hugi remarked that "The Arabs must lose territory in the war, so that they remember that they lost," calling for a punitive strategy of territorial loss for Palestinians as a deterrent. ## Conference Themes: The conference was heavily attended by members of the religious-Zionist community and included workshops led by activists on how to establish new settlements, mirroring previous efforts by Nachala in the West Bank. Musicians and dancers added a celebratory atmosphere to the event, which many attendees viewed as a reaffirmation of their ideological commitment to settlement expansion. The speeches were characterized by a shared belief that Jewish settlements in Gaza would enhance Israel’s security and that the only way to ensure lasting peace was to remove Palestinian control of the land. The overarching narrative was that settlement is both a religious and security imperative, grounded in a belief that the Land of Israel is Jewish by biblical right and that territorial loss is the ultimate punishment for Palestinians. ## Opposition: The event faced opposition from anti-government protesters, including residents of Gaza border communities, who decried the timing of the conference while hostages were still being held by Hamas. Police prevented protesters from entering the event area.
