Systematic Israeli policy of urbicide in South Lebanon villages

Lebanon, South Lebanon 01 September, 2024
On November 5, 2024, Israel had already completely destroyed between 29 and 37 Lebanese border villages. These villages was razed by shelling or explosion, with the historical treasures that were there whose inhabitants are now refugees in their own country. These[ 37 villages have been wiped out](https://m.naharnet.com/stories/en/309075-37-towns-razed-and-40-000-homes-destroyed-in-south-lebanon) across a 120 km stretch from Naqoura to Shebaa. This systematic urbicide creating a no-life zone in South Lebanon. The Israeli army has been booby-trapping and destroying entire neighborhoods in cities and towns in south Lebanon, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported on November 5. Entire streets and neighborhoods in 37 towns have been wiped out and homes have been destroyed. “More than 40,000 residential units have been completely destroyed. This is happening in an area three kilometers deep (from the border) that extends from Naqoura to the outskirts of Khiam” ### Reasons of this destruction campaign Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah infrastructure near the frontier in a bid to push the Iran-backed group away from the border and allow for its residents to return to northern Israel. However, local officials in Lebanon allege that Israel is pursuing a "systematic destruction" campaign. Lebanon’s National News Agency and its Human Rights Commission have condemned Israel’s actions, with the Commission labeling the destruction in at least eight villages as a "war crime." These claims are supported by satellite images and footage, reportedly showing systematic demolitions by Israeli forces since the cross-border hostilities renewed in late 2023. The demolitions clearing Israel’s ‘first belt’ in Lebanon. Satellite & video analysis shows damage in 30 villages within 3km of the border. At least 12 have had lines of buildings destroyed in controlled detonations. This contributes both to a scorched earth policy but also to a buffer zone for tactical purposes. However, the precedent of urbicide committed in Gaza, and the indiscriminate destruction of archaeological, religious or cultural treasures, suggests a logic of ethnic cleansing. “There are two reasons Israel is using this detonations strategy,” said [retired Lebanese armed forces general Akram Kamal Srawi](https://www.ft.com/content/92b4a83a-c5cf-4354-93e7-645f92e74fbb?accessToken=zwAAAZMIoz8GkdOStKg6xc9DVNOT52RfkudPuw.MEQCICmyGR7ybmbM1ZLJSn69kBapnZuBv5lV_YZnVYPpJktWAiBdkLMKSYMIAFJX5okDqjM8TACsP27fnyHhg9crLTntxA&segmentId=e95a9ae7-622c-6235-5f87-51e412b47e97&shareType=enterprise&shareId=126fa708-5e4c-4816-8bcc-c5ea7e7c2589). The first is to **clear lines of sight for potential incursions** deeper into Lebanon in an area where Hizbollah maintains the upper hand and has caused significant losses for Israel. The second is that Israel has adopted **a scorched earth strategy in order to wage psychological warfare** on Hizbollah’s base people **by televising these detonations and weaken support for the group** — which will never work,” he added Sources : [1](https://www.rfi.fr/en/middle-east/20241104-video-shows-massive-detonations-in-lebanon-border-village) ![2](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Gbn_jKWWIAArB-J?format=jpg&name=large) [3](https://www.lorientlejour.com/article/1432070/larmee-israelienne-rase-un-cimetiere-a-blida-detruit-une-ecole-et-fait-sauter-des-maisons-a-meis-el-jabal.html) [4](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x97uosq) [5](https://apnews.com/article/hezbollah-israel-lebanon-buffer-zone-invasion-478f6970b049b3be52cc56c8e14b84e6) ![](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GahLctIXQAEgnMZ?format=jpg&name=large)*New satellite imagery analysis shows that in a 3-sq-mile area of southern Lebanon, covering Blida, Mhaibib, and southern Meiss el-Jabal, at least 296 buildings have recently been flattened; majority confirmed destroyed by Israeli military. This is a very conservative estimate.* ![](https://www.ft.com/__origami/service/image/v2/images/raw/https%3A%2F%2Fig.ft.com%2Fimages%2F8269524691-iuz0b.jpg?source=ig) ## The detroyed villages (Ongoing documentation) ### Mais al-Jabal : After the blowing up of the village by Israeli army, around 70% of Mais al-Jabal is reported to be destroyed, with numerous detonations causing extensive structural damage across the village. Homes were reduced to dust, and large blasts occurred near a vacated hospital. Four elderly residents, aged between 85 and 90, are reportedly trapped in the village, awaiting rescue due to the ongoing instability and destruction. The village’s mayor, Abdul-Monhem Choukair, has accused Israeli forces of conducting a campaign of "systematic destruction," describing the destruction as deliberate. The Israeli aggression targeted the historic “Manshiyah” building in Baalbek, dating back to the Ottoman era and located near the Baalbek Fortress, causing severe damage in the recent attacks. This building held centuries of history and culture, standing as a living testament to our shared cultural heritage. The loss of this unique landmark, adjacent to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an irreparable loss, not only for Lebanon but for all of humanity’s heritage. The Manshiyah was an architectural and historical icon, embodying a living heritage for generations. Its destruction under the current circumstances is a profound loss to us all. We once again call on UNESCO to intervene urgently to protect the remaining heritage sites in Baalbek and the entirety of Lebanese cultural heritage, which faces escalating threats today. While Lebanon remains committed to international agreements, it urgently needs UNESCO’s active intervention to preserve its historical legacy amid the current circumstances. We hope that this message will receive your attention and immediate intervention and that we may work together to protect our precious cultural landmarks. Sincerely, Mohammad Wissam Al-Mortada Minister of Culture"*

Jenin Siege during "Operation Summer Camp"

West Bank, Jenin 28 August, 2024
### Jenin Siege during "Operation Summer Camp": - Launched on Aug. 28, 2024, by Israel, it is the largest military invasion in the northern West Bank in over two decades. - The operation focuses on Jenin, with simultaneous actions in other cities like Tubas, Nablus, Ramallah, and Tulkarem. - Israel justifies the operation as a fight against Palestinian resistance groups like the Jenin Brigades. ## Civilian Infrastructure Destroyed: Israeli forces heavily damaged civilian infrastructure in Jenin refugee camp, described as a form of collective punishment.Bulldozers and armored vehicles destroyed homes, streets, and markets. 70% of camp streets and surrounding areas were bulldozed. The refugee camp has been turned into a battlefield, forcing residents to stay indoors. ## Siege on Jenin: The siege blocked access to essential resources like water, food, and medicine. Civilians, including children, the elderly, and the chronically ill, have been trapped inside without help. Some women and children managed to escape at gunpoint, while men and boys were detained. ## Mass Arrests and Human Rights Violations: - Israeli forces carried out mass arrests of men and boys, including 72-year-old Khayriyeh Khrayneh’s family members. Her husband (a diabetic) and eldest son (a cancer patient) were arrested despite needing medical care. - Eyewitnesses described brutal tactics: Palestinian detainees were used as human shields, and attack dogs were unleashed on families. - Journalists and media correspondants are systematically threatened by Israeli vehicles or reckless shooting. ## Blocking Medical Access: - Ambulances were denied entry to the camp, and paramedics were shot at, preventing the retrieval of bodies. - The main hospital in Jenin was put under lockdown by Israeli Border Police, turning the surrounding area into a "closed military zone." - Even when ambulances were allowed through, they were stopped, and patients were forced to show ID before being admitted. ## Deaths and Casualties: - At least 19 Palestinians were killed in Jenin during the siege, including minors. - An 83-year-old man, Tawfiq Qandeel, was shot by Israeli forces and left to die without medical help. His body was later run over by military vehicles. - Three Palestinian children were killed when their vespa was bombed while delivering bread to the residents of Jenin. - Since October 2023, nearly 700 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, with 185 in Jenin alone. ## Brutality of Military Tactics: - The operation in Jenin involved anti-tank rifle grenades destroying civilian infrastructure, sporadic gunfire, and drones flying overhead (likely for surveillance or attacks). - Civilians described widespread fear and destruction, with Israeli soldiers using homes as military outposts and placing snipers on rooftops. ## Worsening Humanitarian Crisis: - The Israeli military siege left Jenin and nearby cities under curfew, with road closures and checkpoints stifling movement for both residents and journalists. - Palestinians were unable to access basic necessities like flour and baby food due to the complete lockdown of the city. - Medical staff, such as nurses, reported being unable to go home for days due to the danger posed by the military operation. ## Israeli Justification: Israeli military leadership stated their intention to target Palestinian armed resistance, stating they would move "from city to city, refugee camp to refugee camp." But despite their claims of targeting militants, the majority of the casualties were civilians, deepening resentment among the Palestinian population and increasing support for resistance groups. ## Collective Punishment and Civilian Displacement: Civilians in Jenin reported feeling that the military operations were **designed to push them out of their homes**. Jenin’s residents are increasingly describing the siege as an **effort to depopulate the area**. Residents **drew comparisons between the treatment of Jenin and Gaza, seeing the same tactics of displacement and destruction** being used in both regions. Tulkarm Raid & Siege Following "Operation Summer camp"

West Bank, Tulkarm 28 August, 2024
Tulkarm or Tulkarem (Arabic: طولكرم, Ṭūlkarm) is a Palestinian city in the West Bank, the capital of the Tulkarm Governorate of the State of Palestine - **1967**: Tulkarm came **under Israeli occupation** following the Six-Day War. - **1982**: **Israeli Civil Administration took control** of Tulkarm from the military government. - **1995**: After the Oslo Accords, **control of Tulkarm was transferred to the Palestinian National Authority** (PNA) on December 10, becoming the third city from which Israeli forces withdrew. **Early 2000s**: During the Second Intifada, **Israel temporarily reoccupied Tulkarm**. **2005**: Israeli military administration ended, and **control of Tulkarm was returned to the PNA**, which imposed new weapons restrictions on militants. **October 19, 2023**: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) re-entered Tulkarm. Israel carries out very frequent raids there and the agricultural lands are subject to frequent attacks by settlers and soldiers. **Since August 28, 2024**, Israel has launched a large-scale offensive on various cities in the northern West Bank, called "Operation Summer Camp" ## What is Israel Doing to Palestinians in Tulkarm? **** ### Frequent Israeli Raids: Tulkarm, a city and refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, faces near-daily Israeli raids . Israel claims these operations target militants, particularly from Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades. However, these raids involve significant destruction of civilian infrastructure. ### Destruction of Homes and Infrastructure: During the raids, Israeli forces **deploy bulldozers to destroy large residential areas, schools, and hospitals**. Homes are set on fire, and Israeli troops reportedly **prevent local relief workers** from extinguishing these blazes. ### Collective Punishment Tactics: This destruction aims to collectively punish the population, according to experts, in response to pockets of armed resistance against the Israeli occupation. Following the **Activist Shadi Abdullah**, who documents Israeli abuses, Israeli forces used to - demolish homes - intentionally cut off basic necessities such as water and electricity. - Israeli soldiers cooperate with illegal settlers to attack civilians, adding to the fear and hardship faced by Palestinians in Tulkarm. ### Civilian Impact: Civilians in Tulkarm are constantly at risk from both Israeli forces and settlers, as the city lies between several Israeli settlements. The destruction of residential areas forces Palestinians into overcrowded, remaining safe zones, further increasing the already high population density due to previous displacements. ### Strategic Importance of Tulkarm: Tulkarm holds strategic value for its fertile agricultural land and access to natural water resources. However, the illegal Israeli settlements have appropriated much of this land, forcing Palestinian farmers to rely on expensive tanker water and rainwater collection systems. ### Role of Drones and Heavy Weaponry: - Drones play a key role in Israeli raids, providing air cover and targeting Palestinian fighters. Israel has used drones extensively in other West Bank cities like Jenin and Nur Shams, where they killed several Palestinians in July, Augustus and September, since the beginning of "Operation Summer Camp" - Israel’s use of drones, bulldozers, and heavy military equipment is part of a broader strategy to instill fear in younger generations and suppress armed resistance. However, this tactic has not succeeded in demoralizing the civilian population, who continue to support the resistance movement as part of the broader struggle against Israeli occupation.

This operation, reported by Israeli media, involves thousands of soldiers and is expected to last for days. The IDF operation, which is reportedly named **Operation Summer Camps**, is pretending coming in response to Israeli concern about a growing threat to their security from the occupied territories amid the war against Hamas and clashes with Hezbollah in the north.
