### Jenin Siege during "Operation Summer Camp": - Launched on Aug. 28, 2024, by Israel, it is the largest military invasion in the northern West Bank in over two decades. - The operation focuses on Jenin, with simultaneous actions in other cities like Tubas, Nablus, Ramallah, and Tulkarem. - Israel justifies the operation as a fight against Palestinian resistance groups like the Jenin Brigades. ## Civilian Infrastructure Destroyed: Israeli forces heavily damaged civilian infrastructure in Jenin refugee camp, described as a form of collective punishment.Bulldozers and armored vehicles destroyed homes, streets, and markets. 70% of camp streets and surrounding areas were bulldozed. The refugee camp has been turned into a battlefield, forcing residents to stay indoors. ## Siege on Jenin: The siege blocked access to essential resources like water, food, and medicine. Civilians, including children, the elderly, and the chronically ill, have been trapped inside without help. Some women and children managed to escape at gunpoint, while men and boys were detained. ## Mass Arrests and Human Rights Violations: - Israeli forces carried out mass arrests of men and boys, including 72-year-old Khayriyeh Khrayneh’s family members. Her husband (a diabetic) and eldest son (a cancer patient) were arrested despite needing medical care. - Eyewitnesses described brutal tactics: Palestinian detainees were used as human shields, and attack dogs were unleashed on families. - Journalists and media correspondants are systematically threatened by Israeli vehicles or reckless shooting. ## Blocking Medical Access: - Ambulances were denied entry to the camp, and paramedics were shot at, preventing the retrieval of bodies. - The main hospital in Jenin was put under lockdown by Israeli Border Police, turning the surrounding area into a "closed military zone." - Even when ambulances were allowed through, they were stopped, and patients were forced to show ID before being admitted. ## Deaths and Casualties: - At least 19 Palestinians were killed in Jenin during the siege, including minors. - An 83-year-old man, Tawfiq Qandeel, was shot by Israeli forces and left to die without medical help. His body was later run over by military vehicles. - Three Palestinian children were killed when their vespa was bombed while delivering bread to the residents of Jenin. - Since October 2023, nearly 700 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, with 185 in Jenin alone. ## Brutality of Military Tactics: - The operation in Jenin involved anti-tank rifle grenades destroying civilian infrastructure, sporadic gunfire, and drones flying overhead (likely for surveillance or attacks). - Civilians described widespread fear and destruction, with Israeli soldiers using homes as military outposts and placing snipers on rooftops. ## Worsening Humanitarian Crisis: - The Israeli military siege left Jenin and nearby cities under curfew, with road closures and checkpoints stifling movement for both residents and journalists. - Palestinians were unable to access basic necessities like flour and baby food due to the complete lockdown of the city. - Medical staff, such as nurses, reported being unable to go home for days due to the danger posed by the military operation. ## Israeli Justification: Israeli military leadership stated their intention to target Palestinian armed resistance, stating they would move "from city to city, refugee camp to refugee camp." But despite their claims of targeting militants, the majority of the casualties were civilians, deepening resentment among the Palestinian population and increasing support for resistance groups. ## Collective Punishment and Civilian Displacement: Civilians in Jenin reported feeling that the military operations were **designed to push them out of their homes**. Jenin’s residents are increasingly describing the siege as an **effort to depopulate the area**. Residents **drew comparisons between the treatment of Jenin and Gaza, seeing the same tactics of displacement and destruction** being used in both regions. Tulkarm or Tulkarem (Arabic: طولكرم, Ṭūlkarm) is a Palestinian city in the West Bank, the capital of the Tulkarm Governorate of the State of Palestine - **1967**: Tulkarm came **under Israeli occupation** following the Six-Day War. - **1982**: **Israeli Civil Administration took control** of Tulkarm from the military government. - **1995**: After the Oslo Accords, **control of Tulkarm was transferred to the Palestinian National Authority** (PNA) on December 10, becoming the third city from which Israeli forces withdrew. **Early 2000s**: During the Second Intifada, **Israel temporarily reoccupied Tulkarm**. **2005**: Israeli military administration ended, and **control of Tulkarm was returned to the PNA**, which imposed new weapons restrictions on militants. **October 19, 2023**: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) re-entered Tulkarm. Israel carries out very frequent raids there and the agricultural lands are subject to frequent attacks by settlers and soldiers. **Since August 28, 2024**, Israel has launched a large-scale offensive on various cities in the northern West Bank, called "Operation Summer Camp" ## What is Israel Doing to Palestinians in Tulkarm? **** ### Frequent Israeli Raids: Tulkarm, a city and refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, faces near-daily Israeli raids . Israel claims these operations target militants, particularly from Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades. However, these raids involve significant destruction of civilian infrastructure. ### Destruction of Homes and Infrastructure: During the raids, Israeli forces **deploy bulldozers to destroy large residential areas, schools, and hospitals**. Homes are set on fire, and Israeli troops reportedly **prevent local relief workers** from extinguishing these blazes. ### Collective Punishment Tactics: This destruction aims to collectively punish the population, according to experts, in response to pockets of armed resistance against the Israeli occupation. Following the **Activist Shadi Abdullah**, who documents Israeli abuses, Israeli forces used to - demolish homes - intentionally cut off basic necessities such as water and electricity. - Israeli soldiers cooperate with illegal settlers to attack civilians, adding to the fear and hardship faced by Palestinians in Tulkarm. ### Civilian Impact: Civilians in Tulkarm are constantly at risk from both Israeli forces and settlers, as the city lies between several Israeli settlements. The destruction of residential areas forces Palestinians into overcrowded, remaining safe zones, further increasing the already high population density due to previous displacements. ### Strategic Importance of Tulkarm: Tulkarm holds strategic value for its fertile agricultural land and access to natural water resources. However, the illegal Israeli settlements have appropriated much of this land, forcing Palestinian farmers to rely on expensive tanker water and rainwater collection systems. ### Role of Drones and Heavy Weaponry: - Drones play a key role in Israeli raids, providing air cover and targeting Palestinian fighters. Israel has used drones extensively in other West Bank cities like Jenin and Nur Shams, where they killed several Palestinians in July, Augustus and September, since the beginning of "Operation Summer Camp" - Israel’s use of drones, bulldozers, and heavy military equipment is part of a broader strategy to instill fear in younger generations and suppress armed resistance. However, this tactic has not succeeded in demoralizing the civilian population, who continue to support the resistance movement as part of the broader struggle against Israeli occupation.
**Israel's Extensive Military Operation in the West Bank** The Israeli military has launched its most extensive invasion of the occupied West Bank since 2002, focusing on the Palestinian towns of Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nablus. This operation, reported by Israeli media, involves thousands of soldiers and is expected to last for days. The IDF operation, which is reportedly named **Operation Summer Camps**, is pretending coming in response to Israeli concern about a growing threat to their security from the occupied territories amid the war against Hamas and clashes with Hezbollah in the north. But comes as a continuation of the far-right government's desire to carry out a campaign of **ethnic cleansing.** **Key Events:** • August 28 Night Attack: The Israeli army initiated the assault with massive troops, including air support. They are reportedly on the verge of invading a central hospital in Jenin. • Foreign Minister's Statement: Early this morning, Israel’s Foreign Minister tweeted about the need to displace Palestinians from areas in the West Bank. • Evacuation and Destruction: Evacuation orders have been issued to Palestinian communities in refugee camps across the region. Full-scale destruction and the cutting of water supply are already underway. • Media Coverage: Israeli media has provided minimal coverage of the offensive, despite its scale. **Intent to destroy living conditions, ethnical cleansing evidences :** • Ambulance Stations Under Siege: The ambulance station in Al-Far’a camp in the West Bank is under siege by Israeli forces. Paramedics have been forcibly removed and lined up against the wall, preventing them from performing their duties. • Siege on Hospitals: The IDF is imposing a siege on Jenin Hospital, Al-Israa Specialized Hospital and Thabet Hospital : Israeli military vehicles have surrounded, obstructing ambulances and cutting off essential medical aid, according to the Wafa news agency. • Blockades and Water Cuts and electricity in Tulkarem and Jenin cutting water pipes in Tulkarem, • Settlers invade the Al Aqsa compound. This constitutes a full-scale assault on Palestinian lives and sacred sites. • Ongoing Arrests and Field Investigations: The IDF has launched a campaign of arrests and field investigations since the morning in the towns of Aroura, Beit Rima, Kafr Ain, and Qarawat Bani Zeid in the Ramallah district. • Destruction of Refugee Camps: The military, accompanied by bulldozers, is destroying and besieging refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas. • Raids in Jerusalem: Israeli police are raiding Anata and Shu'afat refugee camps in occupied Jerusalem, deploying tear gas and arresting several people. • Casualties: The death toll has risen to 10 people, with dozens more injured. Due to the ongoing siege on hospitals and the broader assault, the exact number of arrests remains unknown
The 2-storey home of the Abu Hadrous family was struck by an Israeli airstrike on the night of August 21 in Khan Younis. The father, Tareq Abu Hadrous, recorded the aftermath from the debris of his destroyed home, where only he and his daughter survived, while **10 family members perished or remain buried under the rubble**. The father told the Gaza Civil Defense that out of his family of 16, 4 were not at home, whereas 10 were killed and/or under the rubble including his wife, daughter, sister and nieces. The Civil Defense and the father coordinated about a rescue. However, the target area was noted to be dangerous due to **IDF presence and rescue teams needed to coordinate** with the Red Crescent and getting clearance from the IDF, which didn't happen. The father and daughter found themselves with no alternative but to leave the site and their beloved ones behind, risking their safety. The martyrs were **recovered from the rubble 3days later**, on August 24, after the IDF's withdrawal from Hamad City: 1. Sundus Al-Saidi, 4 years old 2. Wasim Al-Saidi, 10 years old 3. On August 10, 2024 at dawn, Israel bombed the Al-Tabi'in Sharia School for Boys, located in al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City, northern Gaza. The strike happened as people had **gathered to perform the dawn prayer** in the school's mosque and led to a large scale massacre where **over 100 people were murdered, gruesomely dismembered**. Many survivors and journalists described this as one of the [absolute worst massacres](https://aje.io/x9tkr3?update=3110589) since October 7, 2023. ### Context Al-Tabiin is a religious muslim [school](https://web.facebook.com/tabeenschool/?locale=ar_AR&_rdc=1&_rdr) for the study of Qur'an and Sharia. The school housed [2,400 displaced persons](https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/israeli-strikes-school-kills-least-100-displaced-palestinians). Israeli forces launched **three bombs** on the school's prayer hall **during Fajr (dawn) prayer**, between 5:15-5:30 am, right as the prayer started, as multiple witnesses testified the bombs struck with the Takbirat al-Ihram. Muslim prayers start between 10 to 15 minutes after the Adhan (call to prayer), to allow worshippers time perform their ablutions and head to the mosque for congregational prayer. The **timing** of the attack and the **use of multiple bombs** indicates that Israel **deliberately intended to inflict maximum harm** with full knowledge of the scale of civilian slaughter. The Israeli airstrikes targeted 2 floors of the school: the first bomb struck an area inhabited by displaced women. The second one hit the prayer hall at ground floor. In a report filmed the following day (August 11) journalist Islam Badr documented the impact and clearly noted how only [the mosque specifically](https://x.com/islambader1988/status/1822606542761312455) was bombed, and not other parts of the school. Journalist Ans Al-Sharid described the massacre as another indication of Israel's genocide being also a ["*war on Islam"](https://x.com/AnasAlSharif0/status/1822606574940041577). ### Casualties Over 100 people were confirmed killed as of August 10, 13:40 GMT, accounting for **at least 90% of all those who were present for prayer**. A couple of days later, Al-Ahli Arab (Baptist) hospital Senior Nurse Mohammad Saeed Al-Sheikh [stated](https://x.com/AlMoshtabik/status/1823277044077043972) that the death toll reached **over 107 people killed and more than 200 injuries**. Most of the footage from the scene was horrific and extremely graphic. Families, journalists and first responders alike were visibly extremely distraught by what they witnessed at the site of the massacre, decried as scenes from hell by some. Bodies were found **torn to shreds**, at least 15 of which were too [disfigured to identify](https://aje.io/x9tkr3?update=3110282), and/or [burned to death](https://x.com/islambader1988/status/1822104766475866415), whereas some victims were [flung far](https://x.com/islambader1988/status/1822238401334043125) by the violent explosions. **Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza Civil Defence** stated that the crews did [not find a single body without limbs severed](https://aje.io/x9tkr3?update=3110797). Confirmed reports indicate that some of those killed in the massacre were survivors of previous attacks in various evacuation centres over the last 10 days. They were left sheltering alone in the school after having lost family. The murder of these last survivors further led to Palestinian [families being wiped off the Civil Registry](https://aje.io/x9tkr3?update=3110428). Among the martyrs was the **90 year-old Mahmoud "Abu Nabil" Al-Jaabari**, a [Nakba survivor](https://x.com/AnasAlSharif0/status/1824170261819822102). He had lost his home, sons, and grandsons in the current genocide and succumbed to injuries on the morning on August 15. He left behind his widow who said a few days before that the couple have [nothing left in their life](https://x.com/Yusuf198989/status/1822642298204659911). ### Weapon: Explosive Ordnance expert Trevor Ball confirmed that US-made GBU-39 small diameter bomb was used in the Israeli strike on the school and mosque compound, based on [fragments found on the scene](https://x.com/goodwinallegra/status/1822248347761070223) (also confirmed by CNN's Allegra Goodwin). ### Israeli spin An IDF spokesperson described the death toll as "exaggerated". In an interview on Sky News on August 12, Israeli government spokesperson **David Mencer** outrageously claimed, when asked about the civilians killed that "there were **no civilians** killed". IDF claims about "terrorists" who were eliminated in the attack were promptly debunked twice by researchers in contact with their families in Gaza: - [First time](https://x.com/RamAbdu/status/1822621920442912770) - [Amended list](https://x.com/RamAbdu/status/1822995321888088234)
