Ahmad Manasra released after 10 years

West Bank, East Jerusalem 09 Apr, 2025 - 10 Apr, 2025
In 2015, Manasra 13 y/o and his 15-year-old cousin, Hassan, were accused of stabbing two Israelis in the illegal Pisgat Ze’ev settlement in the occupied West Bank. His cousin was shot dead at the scene, whereas Manasra was hit by a car and sustained serious head injuries while an Israeli mob jeered at him. Videos circulated at the time showed a young and distressed Manasra as he lay bleeding on the ground. Ahmad Manasra was arrested in October 2015 in connection with a stabbing incident in occupied East Jerusalem. Despite evidence suggesting he did not participate in the stabbings, and despite his young age, he was subjected to harsh interrogation without legal representation or the presence of his parents. Footage of his interrogation, showing him distressed and injured, sparked international concern. In 2016, Ahmad Manasra was convicted of attempted murder in proceedings that raised serious concerns about due process and his rights as a child. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison, later reduced to nine and a half years in prison. His request for early release on medical grounds were rejected by the Israeli parole committee in 2022, decisions which the Israeli courts upheld. During his years of incarceration, Ahmad Manasra’s mental health significantly deteriorated, particularly during nearly two years spent in solitary confinement beginning in November 2021. Amnesty International repeatedly raised concerns about his well-being and the detrimental impact of prolonged solitary confinement, which violates international law. **On April 9**, it was annouced, by the Palestinian Prisoners' Affairs Authority, that Ahmad Manasra, now 23 years old, will be freed from Israeli prisons this Friday after spending 10 years in brutal conditions. Ahmad, who is from east Jerusalem, was detained by Israel as a child in 2015, at only 13 years old, and has since endured severe suffering in Israeli prisons. Though not found to have participated in the alleged stabbings cited by the Israeli authorities, he was convicted and sentenced to nine and a half years. On the day of his arrest, he was severely beaten, resulting in a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury, and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan was killed. Since November 2021, he has been held in prolonged solitary confinement, leading to serious mental health issues, including schizophrenia and depression. He has been subjected to ruthless physical and psychological interrogation sessions, isolated from other prisoners, and deprived of visits and necessary treatment. **On April 10**, Israeli authorities released Manasra on Thursday away from the main gate of Nafha Prison, where his family had been waiting to welcome him, Al Mayadeen reported. Instead, he was released in Bir al-Saba (Beersheba), where he encountered a local resident of the town who assisted in contacting his family, according to the Jerusalem Prisoners’ Families Committee. A Bedouin man from the Negev (Naqab) received Ahmad and called his family to inform them that their son had been freed. Immediately after his release, the occupation forces summoned Ahmed Manasra to the police center in occupied Jerusalem, where they handed him a house arrest order until next Sunday & a fine of 3,000 shekels.
