Archivist Notes: Israeli airstrikes on Jenin

On January 14, 2025, at 22:15 p.m., the Israeli military has carried out three airstrikes on the P.A.-besieged Jenin Camp in the occupied West Bank. Three Israeli drone-fired missiles that targeted a group of young men near the Return Roundabout in Jenin camp last night around 10 p.m.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports at least six people killed and several others injured. A “number of injuries” are in stable condition. Four of the murdered were transferred to Jenin Governmental Hospital, and two were transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital.

According to documentation collected by Defense for Children International, Mahmoud Ashraf Mustafa Gharbieh, 14, was sitting with his father, who sustained critical injuries, along with a group of young Palestinian men. Mahmoud suffered critical injuries to the upper part of his body, according to information collected by DCIP. His father’s condition is stable. Palestinian ambulances brought the victims to the Jenin Governmental Hospital, where Mahmoud was pronounced dead on arrival. “Israeli forces routinely use aerial weapons in densely populated civilian areas with no regard for Palestinian children’s lives,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director at DCIP. “The square in Jenin refugee camp is a community gathering point and a bustling area where residents do their daily shopping, and Israeli forces targeted Palestinians, including Mahmoud, with deadly drone strikes when they posed no threat to the Israeli military.”

Some sources says that Mahmoud Abbas’ security forces opened fire on the young men who recovered the bodies of the martyrs of the bombing in Jenin camp.

Context

The strike came amidst the ongoing PA besiegement of the Jenin camp for over 40 days despite that the Jenin Brigade and the Resistance Factions in Jenin Camp agreed to an initiative proposed to prevent Palestinian bloodshed.

The Jenin Battalion of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s al-Quds Brigades agreed to an initiative to end the recent violence between its fighters and Palestinian Authority security forces.

Statement from the Spokesperson of the Palestinian Security Forces

In response to the crime committed by the Israeli occupation army by targeting the Jenin camp, the security institution affirms the following: In light of the progress made by the security institution in imposing security and order, and establishing the rule of law within the framework of “Operation Homeland Protection,” and the flexibility shown by the security institution towards the initiative launched by the local community in Jenin to address the current situation, the occupation army proceeded to launch missile attacks on the Jenin camp, resulting in the martyrdom of several citizens. This is a blatant and premeditated intervention aimed at disrupting efforts and thwarting all attempts made to maintain security, order, and restore normal life. It also reflects the occupation’s malicious intentions to hinder any national effort that contributes to the protection of our people. In this context, we have previously expressed our serious concerns about the intervention of the occupation army at the last moment to sabotage the “Homeland Protection” operation and disrupt the efforts of the security institution to achieve security and stability for our Palestinian people.
