"Today is "Shabbat Hebron", an annual event where, for the past 30 years, thousands of Israelis have ventured into the heart of the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank, home to approximately 250,000 Palestinians and around 800 Israeli settlers. As part of this event, the Israeli military imposes a lockdown on large areas of the city (affecting only Palestinians, of course) for two full days. The already severely restricted freedom of movement for Palestinians is entirely suspended to accommodate this settler festival. Year after year, this event becomes a fertile ground for mass violence, with settlers destroying property and attacking Palestinians with impunity, under the protection and endorsement of the Israeli army and government. This reality cannot continue. We must end the occupation and the violence immediately. We must refuse to participate in these crimes - better to be imprisoned than to be complicit in such injustices! No one is free until we are all free✊☮️" - Source
On the Jewish holiday of Shabbat Chayei Sarah, the Israeli military imposed a curfew on Palestinian families in the H2 area of Hebron. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right figure, led thousands of Israeli settlers in storming Hebron's Ibrahimi Mosque to mark the Jewish holiday Chayei Sarah. The Israeli army sealed off Hebron’s Old City, imposed a curfew, and evicted Palestinians and mosque employees from the site until Saturday evening, according to local activists.
Hebrew Media: A serious incident in Hebron, where Jewish settler rioters attempted to attack the commander of the Central Region.
Tents Israelis are set next to the Cave of the Patriarchs, which is holy for both the Jewish and Muslim religion. Only Jews can stay there.
Context:
The Ibrahimi Mosque, revered by Muslims and Jews as the burial site of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has been a flashpoint of tension. Since a 1994 massacre by a Jewish extremist, the site has been divided between Muslim and Jewish worshippers. It is located in a heavily militarized area where 400 Israeli settlers live under the protection of 1,500 soldiers. In 2017, UNESCO declared it a Palestinian World Heritage Site.
