"Just in Seventh Grade" "I love animals, especially cats and rabbits, and I dream of becoming a journalist." Taqa Ghazawi, a 12-year-old Palestinian girl from Jerusalem, is a seventh-grade student. She was arrested by Israeli police officers for drawing and writing Palestinian symbols and slogans, including the iconic watermelon in the colors of the Palestinian flag. She was abducted by Israeli police officers in civilian clothes while walking home from school with a friend. "I was subjected to harsh interrogation. They tied my hands, blindfolded me, and deprived me of food and water for five days," Taqa recalls. Inside the prison, she felt extreme cold. In her cell at Hasharon and Al-Maskobiya prisons, her body trembled constantly. Female soldiers subjected her to a strip search and threatened to hang her from the ceiling. But she was never afraid. She faced it all with a constant smile. Taqa loves animals, especially cats and rabbits, and dreams of becoming a renowned journalist. But today, she is under house arrest, and forbidden from going to school like her classmates. This is Taqa's story, but it reflects the countless stories of childhood being stolen in occupied Palestine.
