"Six-year-old Mariam was brought to the Indonesian Hospital on a night of relentless bombardment, unconscious from brain trauma and dangerously low blood pressure due to severe internal bleeding. Surgeons found a large piece of shrapnel in her abdomen, deep gashes across her back, multiple fractures, and burns on her face and chest. After days in intensive care, she slowly regained consciousness, unaware that her entire family had been killed. Dr. Youssef Bou Abdallah, a Moroccan doctor who entered Gaza before the crossings closed, was later transferred to work at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. But he couldn’t stop thinking about Mariam asking about her condition daily. Then one morning, during his patient rounds, he was stunned to find her among the wounded transferred from the Indonesian Hospital. The joy of seeing her alive clashed with the tragedy she carries.
