"We were preparing ourselves for sleep, and were surprised by the targeting of our colleagues' tent."

Journalist Abdul Raouf Shaat recounts the details of the moment Israel bombed the journalists' tent near Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, his attempt to rescue journalist Ahmad Mansour from the flames, and the martyrdom of journalists Hilmi Al-Faqawi and Yusuf Al-Khazundar.

Translation: There was a targeting of our journalist colleagues from Palestine Today TV which led to the martyrdom of two people, one of them is the journalist Hilmi Al-Faqaawi and the other Yousef Al-Khazundar. There were also a number of injuries including our colleague Ahmad Mansour who was burning in his chair, along with other colleagues Hassan Eslayeh, Ibrahim Al-Bardini, Mahmoud Awad, Mohamed Fayeq and Abdallah Al-Attar.

*The scene was very difficult. It's clear journalists were directly targeted, without warning, deliberately. The goal was to suppress the truth and journalistic work which speaks for the suffering of our people through this war that has been going for over 15 months. Our people went through all the horrors of war.

I was in my tent along with my colleagues as we were just done documenting the Nassar family massacre on Al-Jalal Street in the center of Khan Younis. We went to sleep and it had been barely ten minutes that I lied down and close my eyes when the strike happened. I went out of my tent and saw fire raging. In the middle of it was my colleague, an editor at Palestine Today. The fire was burning him. I can't describe it. I tried to pul him out despite the danger as the fire was intense and there was a gas cylinder on fire. I was not even wearing my press vest as I was asleep. There was a lot of risk entailed and the other guys also tried to rescue the injured. I tried to pull him by his leg grabbing his pants as it was the closest to me and the farthest form the fire but the fire was too intense. So I went around so I can pull him from another angle. The guys brought water, we poured it on him, put out the fire then my colleagues took him to the emergency at Nasser hospital. As of now, his condition is critical, may God be kind to him.

I had fainted from the shock of what I had witnessed. The guys took my to the hospital. I had also sustained light burns when trying to pull my colleague. I did not realize I was burned until I came to.

This is not the first time us journalists have been targeted. There have been a lot and many of our dear colleagues were martyred. We chose this way, this profession to relay the message, to share our struggle, the plight of our people who experience the most difficult worst war in history, this genocide. This is our duty. Journalism is a trust placed in us. We must continue and bear this ethical responsibility as long as we can.

As journalists, we demand international organizations, including those specialized in journalism rights and human rights to support us and treat as any other journalists in the world. We are journalists. We are not party (to conflicts). We do not carry weapons. We only have our camera, our pen, our message, sound and images. That is all what we use. We do not carry weapons. We ask them to support us seriously because we fear for ourselves. We have long since stoped feeling any sense of security and asked for protection for all journalists.
