Archivist Notes: Turning an NGO into military barracks in Aida RC (West Bank)

On November 11, 2024, Israeli forces turn a Palestinian NGO, "Lajee centre”, in addition of some houses into military barracks in Aida refugee camp, north of Bethlehem. They used the pretext of the Jewish holidays. They took down the Palestinian flag and raised the Zionist flag and set up machine guns towards the camp.

According to the Irish-Palestinian ONG, The Israeli Forces stormed and occupied @Lajeecenter and turned the building into a military barracks. The Forces claim they will be here for at least 2 days, ensuring a large military presence in Aida Camp with heavy machine weaponry installed on the Center's roof. As well as causing fear and alarm for residents of the camp, all programmes must be stopped for the safety of staff and participants. This affects the kindergarten school, health and environmental, educational, arts, cultural and sports activities including Lajee Celtic.

Context:

Established in 1950 on land leased from Jordan by UNRWA. Located between Bethlehem, Beit Jala, and Jerusalem.Partially surrounded by the West Bank Barrier and near Israeli settlements Har Homa and Gilo (illegal under international law). Most of the camp is under Palestinian control (Area A). Some peripheral areas, like the main road along the Barrier, are under Israeli control (Area C).

Residents created a recreational space on the camp’s border, including a playground, garden, and soccer field.

The living conditions of the residents are severly impacted by this illegal occupation and apartheid :

~ Constant military presence and proximity to a key checkpoint between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. ~ Regular Israeli military incursions and clashes involving residents, often children. ~ Increased injuries due to excessive force by the Israeli military. Limited access to job opportunities in Israel and East Jerusalem. ~ Isolation from previously accessible recreational areas. ~ The camp spans only 0.071 square kilometers, leading to severe overcrowding. ~ Residents cite poor personal safety, limited access, and inadequate infrastructure as urgent
