"During my shift at Nasser Hospital, we find ourselves clinging to the smallest moments, moments where life tries to break through. In front of a tiny mirror, my colleague Dr. Saeed Ma’rouf, from my hometown Beit Lahia, shaves, and I try to joke with him, knowing that words won’t ease his pain, but they might bring him a fleeting smile. Saeed is a man who has endured the horrors of war twice. Once, when the occupation abducted him from Al-Ma’madani Hospital, subjecting him to the depths of torture and humiliation. And again, when they left him in the south, separated from his family still trapped in the north, missing the voices and touch of his children. Yet here he stands, smiling in spite of it all, checking on his family through whatever fragments of news reach us, living with constant worry and a sorrow that deepens every time the bombardment intensifies up north, and he thinks of them surrounded, far from his reach. In the face of all this pain we carry, we press on, unwavering in our duty. We’re committed to our people, to tending the wounded and healing the sick, whatever the cost. Our smiles are an act of resistance, our words an expression of courage. We try to stay, to keep going, holding on to the belief that humanity lives on in our hearts, and that, even when life seems to push us to the brink, it still finds a way to bring us together🙏🫶🏻"
